Cast of Characters

Character reference sheet
hero
Lily
determined, warm-hearted, imaginative
A rosy-cheeked eight-year-old girl with wide chestnut eyes and two lopsided pigtails tied with mismatched ribbons — one yellow, one red. She wears a soft lavender knitted sweater with a small strawberry embroidered on the chest, faded denim overalls with a rolled cuff, and scuffed red rain boots. Her silhouette is small and round-shouldered, always leaning forward with curiosity.
sidekick
Maisie
bubbly, fearless, endearing
A tiny, pudgy five-year-old with enormous hazel eyes and a wispy brown bob crowned by a wonky sunflower clip. She wears a patchwork pinafore dress in mustard and rose squares over a striped long-sleeve shirt, with chunky knitted tights in sage green and small velcro sneakers decorated with painted daisies. Her cheeks are perpetually flushed and she clutches a melting ice-cream cone stub for the first scenes.
antagonist
Dad — Thomas
responsible, soft-hearted, flustered
A broad-shouldered, gentle-giant of a man with a short salt-and-pepper beard, crinkled kind eyes behind round tortoiseshell glasses, and a slightly rumpled appearance. He wears a cozy heather-grey cable-knit sweater pushed up at the sleeves, olive corduroy trousers, and worn leather boots. A reusable grocery tote bag is perpetually slung over one arm and his hair is permanently a little dishevelled.
mentor
Mom — Clara
calm, clever, nurturing
A slender woman with warm brown skin, deep-set amber eyes, and dark curly hair pinned up with a tortoiseshell claw clip with a few loose spirals framing her face. She wears a flowing floral blouse in cream and terracotta tucked into wide-leg rust-coloured trousers, a hand-knitted mustard cardigan draped over her shoulders, and tan ankle boots. A canvas tote printed with illustrated lemons hangs from her elbow.
comic-relief
Biscuit
mischievous, gentle, magnetic
A palm-sized Holland Lop bunny with impossibly soft grey and white patchy fur, one permanently floppy ear and one half-standing ear, and enormous ink-black eyes ringed with white fur giving a permanently startled-yet-adorable look. A tiny frayed blue ribbon is loosely looped around its neck suggesting it once belonged to someone. Its paws are white and oversized for its small round body.
mentor
Mr. Gino
jolly, wise, generous
A short, stout elderly man with a gleaming bald head, a magnificent white walrus moustache, and twinkling dark eyes nearly hidden by generous rosy cheeks. He wears a crisp white apron over a mint-green striped shirt, a small paper hat slightly askew, and has a polka-dot handkerchief tucked jauntily in his breast pocket. His sleeves are always rolled to the elbows and he gestures expansively with a silver ice-cream scoop.

The Story

PANEL 1
Panel 1
Always follow your heart — it finds the sweetest things!
Even sweeter than strawberry ripple?
Much, much sweeter, little one!

Saturday mornings meant ice cream first — and sometimes, unexpected discoveries second.

PANEL 2
Panel 2
Wait… are those — eyes?

Behind the Crunchy-Os, something small and startled blinked back.

PANEL 3
Panel 3
It's the tiniest baby in the WORLD!
Shhh — you'll scare him, Maisie.

Biscuit did not look scared. Biscuit looked like he had been waiting.

PANEL 4
Panel 4
We are absolutely not keeping a— oh.
Oh, Thomas. He chose you.
DAD. He loves you. He LOVES you!

Biscuit had no interest in escaping. He had found exactly who he was looking for.

PANEL 5
Panel 5
He has a ribbon, Dad. Someone loved him.
We'd need a vet check. And a proper hutch.

A rule was bending. You could almost hear it.

PANEL 6
Panel 6
He picked us, Daddy. You can't un-pick.
Pleeeease, Daddy. Pleeeease.
…Clara, say something sensible.

Clara said nothing. She was already checking hutch sizes on her phone.

PANEL 7
Panel 7
We are naming him something dignified. Final answer.
BISCUIT! His name is BISCUIT!
Hi, Biscuit. Welcome to our family.

Some families grow by four paws at a time.
